Two years after the council started its so-called Bicing short-loan bike rental service, it has now an amazing 186,185 members, far outstripping forecasts. In fact, this represents 15% of all Barcelona's population (not including children and the elderly). Bicing has certainly created a cycling craze in Barcelona, and its influence stretches even beyond. Some 250 cities around the world have contacted Barcelona to see how Bicing works with a view to setting up a similar service in their own towns and cities, amongst them: London, New York, Sidney and Seville.
Studies show that Bicing is meeting its objectives, which was to improve mobility and quality of life in Barcelona. Surveys show that 30% of Bicing users do so in conjunction with other transport services like the metro, bus or tram.
6,000 bikes and 400 stations
Through the winter, there are on average 35,000 cycle trips made through the Bicing service, and this rises to 58,000 in the summer time. The service now has 6,000 cycles and 400 drop-off points stationed across town. Each cycle is used 10 times a day on average in the summer and 6 times a day in the winter. Central parts of Barcelona see higher cycle use and each cycle does around 25 kms. a day.
Now the council wants to extend the current 140 kms of cycle lane to 200kms by the end of this mandate in 2011. Some 400 cycles are repaired every day, meaning that each bike passes through the workshop twice a month.
son cambios muy sencillos en nuestra vida diaria, pero pueden hacer una gran diferencia si todos nos proponemos aportar algo para nuestro planeta.
